Lincoln Death Mask Comes to Life Program
Did you know…there is a bronze sculpture of Abraham Lincoln in the new Cedarburg Public Library that some say was inspired by a death mask of our revered 16th President? C.T. Whitehouse is the owner of the sculpture and will speak to the subject of death masks and life masks and their importance in capturing the faces of history.
Whitehouse will provide a twenty-minute video presentation about the making of the Lincoln life masks and how this information is being used nearly 150 years later to give us a greater understanding about the stresses and health of the President who held our country together during the Civil War. With an example of the famous mask created by Leonard Volk prior to Lincoln’s nomination to run for President, there will be a comparison to a mask made by Clark Mills in 1865, just two years prior to Lincoln’s assassination.
Whitehouse will illustrate the use of the Volk mask to the contemporary interpretation of it by sculptor, Ron Chapel. Chapel, a close associate of Whitehouse, who also sculpts in bronze, was commissioned to create two versions of the Lincoln mask, now owned by Whitehouse.
Whitehouse will finish the evening by encouraging questions and discussion about the topic of life and death masks. He may even ask for a volunteer that wishes have his/her own mask made.
